Mary Immaculate Health/Care Services was established by the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, “Grey Nuns” in 1868. At the request of local priest Fr. James Taaffe, five Grey Nuns came to Lawrence to operate a home for orphans and “sick young girls of the mills.”
Over the years, Mary Immaculate’s services have evolved to meet the needs of an ever-changing city of Lawrence. By the 1950s Mary Immaculate had come to serve an increasing number of elderly people in the community, many of whom had worked in the mills and needed health support in their later years. This began a new focus that would lead to the development of one of New England’s largest and most advanced healthcare campuses for the care of elders.
Distinguishing Mary Immaculate today is its continuum of care designed to meet the community’s broad spectrum of needs. Today, our expanded mission includes nursing center care, rehabilitative therapy, independent and supportive housing and assisted living apartments.
Our roots honored, and our Catholic tradition continued through our membership in Covenant Health, a Catholic multi-institutional healthcare and eldercare organization proudly serving New England and Pennsylvania.
Mary Immaculate remains an important part of the fabric of the Greater Lawrence community and the spirit of the Grey Nuns continues to live on our campus in service to all.
