Our Rich History

Mary Immaculate Health/Care Services was established by the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, “Grey Nuns” in 1868. At the request of a local priest, five Grey Nuns came to Lawrence to operate a home for orphans and “sick young girls of the mills”.

Over the years, Mary Immaculate’s services have evolved to meet the needs of an ever-changing Lawrence. By the 1950’s Mary Immaculate had come to serve an increasing number of elders, many of whom had worked in the mills and needed health support in their later years. This began a new focus that would lead to the development of one of New England’s largest and most advanced healthcare campuses for the care of elders.

What distinguishes Mary Immaculate today is its continuum of care designed to meet the broad spectrum of needs. Today, our expanded mission includes nursing center care, independent and supportive housing, assisted living and chair car transportation services.

Our roots are honored, and our Catholic tradition continued through our membership in Covenant Health, a Catholic multi-institutional healthcare and eldercare organization serving New England.

First and foremost, though, Mary Immaculate remains a part of the fabric of the Greater Lawrence community. We are proud that the spirit of the Grey Nuns continues to live on our campus.
