Milestone Birthday Celebrations
Mary Immaculate Health/Care Services hosted two very special birthday parties recently.
Obeline Biron, a resident at MI Nursing/Restorative Center celebrated her 107th birthday in the company of family and friends. To mark the occasion, Sean P. Cardinal O’Malley, OFM Cap., Archbishop of Boston, sent her a set of rosary beads and a personal message of congratulations.
Juana was born in the Dominican Republic,
daughter of Grisilia Ramirez and Domingo Canela. As a child and a young woman, she cultivated a love of dance and, over time, taught all her neighbors to dance. She would charge 25 pesos monthly for dancing lessons. She married Manuel Hernandez and has two daughters, 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. In 1960, she moved to Manhattan from the Dominican Republic and ran a food shop from her home. Her Spanish dishes became neighborhood favorites, and many of the Spanish workers in the area would drop in for lunch.
In 1975, Junana moved to Lawrence and worked in a mill for several years. Her family describes her as a happy lady who is always smiling and willing to do any project given her. According to Granddaughter Magdalena Blouin., “She is a strong archetype in our family and has been a ‘warrior’ all her life. My family has learned from her great work ethics, to forgive others, to be generous and to keep their spirits high no matter what challenges life gives us.”
Congratulations to Junana!
