Update on the Relief Efforts for Haiti
In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Mary Immaculate Health/Care Services established a Donate Haiti fund to support the families of our employees impacted by this incredible disaster. Monies collected through this effort helped a number of MI staff members travel to their native country. They brought with them medical supplies and toiletries donated by many in the community, and returned with first hand reports of the destruction and human toll wrought by this powerful earthquake.
Outreach efforts continued at MI through the course of the summer as we worked to re-stock Dumarsais Estime des Verrettes, a small hospital on the outskirts of Port au Prince. Again, we reached out to the community, and quite frankly, were overwhelmed by the response. Last week, we were able to send this hospital several bins filled with fresh, new hospital linens: sheets, towels, face cloths; over the counter medicines; Band-Aids; toothpaste, and other personal hygiene items. We also collected many pairs of children’s athletic shoes and sneakers and have sent them directly to families in need.
Many in the Greater Lawrence area participated in this project, and we are truly grateful for such generosity. We are especially grateful to our employees who were able to identify concrete and effective ways for us to help. Many thanks to Kathy Callahan, our Director of Mission for organizing this effort. We will continue to share news of the relief effort as we receive it, and join with all of you as we pray for the safety and well-being of families in Haiti still struggling to become whole after this disaster.
